Cross-institutional Approvals

What Is Cross-Institutional Approval?

Cross-institutional approval allows a single Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) to approve a research project conducted across multiple institutions. Participating institutions rely on this lead HREC approval, avoiding duplicate ethics reviews.  (Section 5.1.29 of the National Statement)

When Is It Needed?

Cross-institutional approval is required if your project:

  • Involves recruiting participants or collecting data at more than one institution.
  • Uses a lead HREC model, where one HREC provides the primary ethics approval and other sites rely on it.
  • Is conducted at institutions that are NHMRC-certified for ethics review.

(Section 5.1.29 of the National Statement)

If you have received Ethics approval from another institution (including ACT Health), please submit this through the online application process.  (Please select the Cross Institutional Option)
