In this unit, students plan, develop and commence an industry focussed and engaged research project in their chosen discipline. Students will define a research question based on the application of appropriate theoretical frameworks and commence the research activity. Students will be appointed an appropriate academic supervisor and industry partner to oversee their thesis/project. Students may work individually or collaboratively. At the end of this unit students will present their detailed research plan and their progress to academic, members of their own cohort and industry partners.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Plan a discrete piece of original industry orientated research project, in association with an academic supervisor;
2. Critically evaluate information from a range of sources to develop research questions and to organise and conduct a critical literature review;
3. Take individual responsibility for the planning and implementation of an original piece of industry related research work and to take a leading role in exploring the implications of that work in the broader context;
4. Express professional knowledge, understanding, ideas, arguments and opinions with confidence and clarity; in both spoken and written form, with the effective use of relevant communication aids; and
5. Demonstrate the ability to work ethically within a team and to manage time, goals and priorities.

Prerequisites

Students must have completed 72 credit points of ABB101 Bachelor of Building and Construction Management (Honours) OR ABB201 Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) including 11674 Professional Investigation and Research Methods.
